Our Website History

This site was started in November of 1998, with 150 names.   As a YEAR 2000 project, we successfully worked to expand the data base of family members to 2000, and by late 2007 there were over 4000 individuals in our global family, of which over 3300 are represented as descendants of the “ORIGINAL” Esslemont.

This site is the result of many years of diligent, manual research efforts by many of our relatives, most important of whom has been Peter Duncan Esslemont.   Peter, in the 1960s wrote to many of the family across the globe, detailing his extensive Esslemont research.   He heralded this wave of interest, in sharing with us all his desire to explore our ‘roots’.

Since early January of 2003, Alan Esslemont has enthusiastically taken up this detailed research, thru the ‘Scotlandspeople’ and ‘Genesreunited’ genealogy files.   Alan’s involvement has significantly added to our collective knowledge about the expansion of our global family.
In 2005 we undertook a major reformatting of our web site, which was written by another of our keen family genealogists, Keith Esslemont, who is the IT expert in our group, and gives helps to those of us ‘old fogies’ who are not so computer minded.    His work has made our site much more accessible and easier to use.

Until the latter part of 2009 Bob Esselmont, who was the originator of the “ORIGINAL ESSLEMONT” idea, was the site host, who took on the role of assimilating the incoming data and posting it to the site, but unfortunately ill health forced him to hand over the task to Alan.   We are all very grateful to Bob for what he has done for Esslemont genealogy, and are pleased that he is still in constant touch with us, and available to give us the benefit of his experience. We all salute this spirit of perseverance, and know all our many contributors will be thrilled that you can share here, in the result of their work.
