According to the publication “Blacks: The Surnames of Scotland”, the family name has, as its roots “ESSLEMONT, FROM THE BARONY OF ESSLEMONT (1609 ESSILMOUNTHE) IN THE PARISH OF ELLON”.
However, due to ‘adjustments’ created perhaps by misspelling by registrars, or lack of education, etc., there are a number of known derivations today, EssELmont being very common. The various branches of our name can be read by searching on “ORIGINAL” Esslemont.
All our current branches can trace themselves back to the north east corner of Scotland, but we’ve since extended to:
NORTH EAST SCOTLAND: Aberdeen, Culsamond, Ellon, Flushing, Fraserburgh, Gamrie, Huntly, Keith, Luncarty, Maud, Monquhitter, Mormond, Peterhead, Pitsligo, Rathen, Rathven, St. Fergus, Strichen, Turriff, Tyrie, and others.
ORKNEY: Firth, Longside, Sandwick.
CANADA: Burlington, Calgary, Hull, Montreal. Oakville, Toronto, Transcona, Vancouver, Winnipeg and others,
ENGLAND: Hull, Coventry, London, Corby, Leicester, Newcastle, Carlisle, and others.
AUSTRALIA, FRANCE, IRELAND, NEW ZEALAND, POLAND, SOUTH AFRICA, U.S.A. and several other countries.
PRIVACY POLICY Because of the changing ways of the World, and the ever increasing amount of identity fraud, we are taking even more precautions with our Privacy Policy and taking the final step of completely privatizing any information on the internet concerning those who were born within the past hundred years.
This does not mean that the information on all these individuals is not available, only that it is withheld on our web site, so that the information is not available to those who might use it for illegal purposes. We still have a massive Master File containing over 5000 Esslemonts (and variants), with information that we have collected through all the various genealogical sites, including the official government source for Scottish genealogy, and also from fellow genealogists, who have been good enough to share their family history with us. We are very willing to share this information with those who want to trace their Esslemont genealogy, and also hope that they will also wish to share their findings with us, for the mutual benefits of future Esslemont generations.
AS A FIRST TIME VISITOR In the event of you knowing the names of your grandparents or Great Grandparents it is more than likely that you will find them by using OUR “Ancestor Search Engine”. As well, ALL the surnames in our file can be found on our “INDIVIDUAL LIST, although all the individuals restricted by the Privatization Policy will not be shown or shown as "NAME WITHHELD". (Click ESSLEMONT FAMILY button).”
Females are listed under their birth name.
We link our entire file using a “tree” connotation, although only ‘ORIGINAL” Esslemont, (click ESSLEMONT FAMILT / FAMILY PAGES) and the connected BRANCHES are shown on the web site. Because of the vast numbers of unknown Esslemonts that we only have limited information about, the “SEEDLINGS”, “TWIGS” AND “LEAVES” are only in our Master File:
The “tree” connotations are:
“TRUNK” - our “ORIGINAL” Esslemont, (a fictitious ‘person’ created to make this entire file searchable as one.)
“BRANCHES” - are families where the OLDEST KNOWN ANCESTOR was born before 1800. These include George (1656) Esslemont and John (Methlick 1656) Esslemont, oldest of two of the six main Esslemont trees, and the other four, Peter (Patrick 1714) Esslemont, John (Forgue 1720) Esslemont, William (Auchindoir 1742) Eslement, and Adam (1757) Esslemont, are obtainable through fictitious Unknown (1680) Esslemont, as are “TWIGS”. There is a possibility that Peter (Patrick 1714) Esslemont may be a grandson of John (Methlick 1656) Esslemont through John’s son John, born 1686.
"TWIGS" - Are individuals who range from about 1600 until about 1860 , have further descendants, but to our knowledge, have yet to be connected to our existing main tree branches.
“SEEDLINGS” - are mostly individuals who range from about 1585 to 1800, but with information only for their immediate children.
"'LEAVES' - extend from there to cover the later years. These are individuals with our surname, or variant, whom we cannot (yet) attach to existing branches. Phone book listings would be one source of these, along with numerous names supplied by Scotlandspeople, but with limited identifiable information.
